TAKE ACTION: Send a letter to Congress for better watershed management!

The Medford BLM recently implemented post-fire roadside old-growth clearcutting in riparian reserves serving as headwater tributaries to the Wild and Scenic Rogue River. There was no public planning process and the BLM ignored the concerns of its own soil scientists and wildlife biologists. The Oregon Congressional delegation needs to hear from you that this behavior is unacceptable from public land managers.

I am extremely concerned about the recent post-fire clearcut logging that occurred along new Wild & Scenic-designated creeks, adjacent to the treasured Wild & Scenic Rogue River. These tributaries to the Rogue are located in the Medford BLM's Rum Creek old-growth timber sale, which spans both sides of the river within view of the Grave Creek put-in.

It appears that a number of riparian reserves were clearcut and that the logging activity slash was left on site to feed future wildfires. There are photos and videos documenting the debris torrents, landsliding and slope failures that were exacerbated by the logging.

It is my understanding the Medford BLM has stated that the current 1972 Wild Rogue River Comprehensive Management Plan is inadequate for stewardship of today's river, but they have yet to share with the public when they are going to address updates to the 50-year old management plan. In 2019, 120 miles of the Rogue's tributaries were added to the Wild & Scenic River system, and the agency has yet to address these new designations in their plans. An updated management plan is essential to defining and protecting waterways and their Outstanding Remarkable Values as required by the Wild and Scenic Act. The Rogue River deserves better than this.

I object to the BLM's clearcutting, riparian reserve logging and secretive planning process. I request help from your office in working with federal officials in the BLM to protect and enhance the watershed values that belong to all Americans.
